Dossier Biodiversité
In a context of global decline in wetlands, waterbirds are becoming increasingly dependent on artificial habitats. Civil works such as sewage ponds and retention ponds are generally considered and managed as biological deserts. However, these anthropogenic constructions have a greatly underestimated potential, whereas they often allow an increase in regional biodiversity. Moreover, in Quebec, sewage lagoons are used by several species of declining and precarious birds, whereas the potential role of these structures in conservation has received little consideration until now.
